CEMPI : a brief presentation

The ``Laboratoire d'Excellence'' Centre Européen pour les Mathématiques, la Physique et leurs interactions (CEMPI), a project of the Laboratoire de Mathématiques Paul Painlevé and the Laboratoire de Physique des Lasers, Atomes et Molécules (PhLAM), was created in the context of the "Programme d'Investissements d'Avenir" in February 2012. It has been extended in 2019 and distinguished as one of the "projets-phare" of the ANR  (see the document page 62-63).

The association Painlevé-PhLAM creates in Lille a research unit for fundamental and applied research and for training and technological development that covers a wide spectrum of knowledge stretching from pure and applied mathematics to experimental and applied physics.

The CEMPI has created partnerships with internationally renowned teams in first rate foreign institutes such as University of Bristol, University of Aberdeen and Imperial College London (United Kingdom), K.U. Leuven, Université de Louvain-La-Neuve and the Photonics@be IAP (Belgium), the Max-Planck Institute in Bonn and Berlin Mathematical School (Germany), the Fields Institute in Toronto (Canada) and SISSA, Scuola Normale Superiore Pisa, and Roma Tre University (Italy).

CEMPI RESEARCH in the renewal projet, is structured around three interdisciplinary focus areas.

DYNAMICS
This focus area is concerned with key problems of a mathematical and/or physical nature in which the dynamic plays a key role. These problems may come from the development of innovative optical fibres for telecommunication links and high-power lasers, from the complex behaviour in cold atoms physics and non-linear optics, from the statistical mecanics, from the geometry and actions groups, from the functional analysis.

TOPOLOGY AND APPLICATIONS
This focus area is concerned with topological questions naturally arising, from one hand, in the study of the matter and, on the other hand, in homopical methods in arithmetic and representation theory.

BIOLOGY/MODELISATION STOCHASTIC/DATA SCIENCE
The third area focusses on scientific problems where probabilistic and statistical approaches play an important role. It is concerned with deterministic and/or probabilist dynamic of population, in ecology, and in cellular biology, as well as Data Science and machine learning via determinental processes.
